Frequently Asked Questions about Life Coaching

What is life coaching and how can it benefit me?

Life coaching is a professional service designed to help you move forward — with more clarity, confidence, and direction. It's future-focused: rather than exploring your past, we work on where you are now, where you want to be, and what's genuinely getting in the way. The benefits include clearer goals, stronger self-trust, better emotional regulation, improved relationships, and the kind of accountability that makes consistent progress possible.

How does the coaching process work?

We start with a free introductory session to discuss your goals and see if we're a good fit. From there, sessions are personalised to you — they might include goal-setting, mindset work, accountability check-ins, and practical exercises drawn from psychology. Everything is tailored to your specific situation, not a generic programme.

What can I expect during a coaching session?

Sessions are conversational, supportive, and centred around you. There's no agenda you have to stick to — if something important comes up, we go there. We might explore what's keeping you stuck, review progress since our last session, set new targets, or work through a specific challenge. You'll leave each session with more clarity and a clear sense of what you're working on next.

How often will we meet, and for how long?

Most clients start with weekly or fortnightly sessions lasting 50 minutes, but we'll work out a rhythm that suits your schedule and goals. Some people prefer intensive support at the start and then spread sessions out as they build momentum. There's no fixed structure — it's whatever works best for you.

What kinds of goals can life coaching help me with?

I work with a wide range of goals — including building confidence and self-trust, navigating career transitions, improving communication and relationships, managing stress and burnout, developing healthier habits, and reconnecting with a sense of purpose. If you're not sure whether your goal is a good fit for coaching, just reach out and we can talk it through.

Is coaching right for me if I'm already successful?

Absolutely. Many of my clients are high-functioning people who are achieving a lot externally but feeling stuck, unfulfilled, or out of alignment internally. Coaching isn't only for people in crisis — it's for anyone who wants to grow with more clarity and intention than they'd manage alone.

What's the difference between life coaching and therapy?

Therapy tends to focus on healing — exploring the past, processing trauma, and addressing clinical mental health conditions. Life coaching is forward-focused: we work from where you are now toward where you want to be. I bring a strong psychology background (Masters in Psychology) to my coaching, which means sessions are evidence-based and psychologically informed — but coaching is not a substitute for therapy if you're dealing with a clinical mental health concern. If you're unsure which is right for you, I'm happy to talk it through.

Do you offer online coaching sessions?

Yes — and online coaching is just as effective as in-person. The heart of coaching is the conversation, the connection, and the quality of support — none of which depends on being in the same room. I work with clients across Palmerston North in person and with clients across New Zealand and internationally via Zoom.

How long does it take to see results from coaching?

Most clients notice a meaningful shift in clarity and direction within the first few sessions. Deeper behavioural and mindset changes typically take longer — three to six months of consistent work is where the most significant transformation tends to happen. Results depend on your goals, your commitment between sessions, and how honest you're willing to be in the process.

How do I know if we'll be a good fit?

The free first session is exactly for this. It gives us both a chance to have a real conversation and see whether the fit feels right — without any pressure or obligation. If we're not the right match, I'll do my best to point you toward someone who might be.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. This allows me to offer that time to other clients and keeps our working relationship respectful of each other's time.

Are my sessions confidential?

Yes — everything discussed in our sessions is completely confidential. I follow professional ethical guidelines to protect your privacy. The only exceptions are the standard legal obligations that apply to all coaching and therapeutic relationships (such as if there is a risk of serious harm).

What happens in the free first session?

The free introductory session is a genuine conversation — not a sales pitch. We'll talk about what's going on for you, what you're hoping to change or create, and whether coaching feels like the right kind of support. You'll leave with some clarity regardless of whether we decide to work together. There's no obligation to continue.
